Speeding on Hither Mead
20. Apr 2009 at 20:52

How long will it take for someone to finally sort out the fact that drivers use Hither Mead as a 'rat run' and drive well in excess of 30mph?

Having lost 2 pets in the past 2 years, is it only a matter of time before someONE is hurt on this road....or worse?

A number of visitors to Lydeard have commented on the high speeds reached in what is a fairly densely populated residential area.

My guess is that those with the power to do something about it will inevitably be
reactionary
, and not
preventative
as they should be.

A few years ago a group of residents in rural North Devon took it upon themselves when faced with a similar dilemna to build their own speed humps over night.

Is it time to take action ourselves?

I agree that some people do drive around the village over the speed limit, though you have to take into consideration that
ALOT
of people do not speed and drive around at a sensible speed.

If there was something to be in place e.g. speed bumps, the chance is, it will not prevent the road users to slow down, it will just cause the people who will speed to drive over them at faster speeds though for the sensible drivers, they would only find it annoying to drive over all the time.

I think you will have
ALOT
of objection to speed bumps in this village, i personally do object though i do keep an open mind.

I too am concerned about the speeding on Hithermead; My children cycle on this road. I live on one of the roads off Hithermead and it can be dangerous pulling out in the car as speeders suddenly appear. I would welcome traffic calming measures but would not want to see chicanes.

Trafic calming measures could be good as long as there is a sensible amount of restriction, if you put too much me and a few others think that it will be quite annoying.

though also it can be quite dangerous if you put speed bumps just around a sharp bend, all ideas are welcome.

Token's comment could have been my own.  We too have lost 2 pets in Bishops Lydeard in the past couple of years - one on Hithermead and the other on Taunton Road.

Some mornings I wait near the bus stop at the end of Hithermead and would say approximately 5-10% of traffic are over the speed limit.

What about one of the speed signs that light up if you are over the limit - this at least will make people aware of their speed and perhaps think twice.  I have only every seen these in areas over a short period of time though - could be a start.  Do the council supply?

With regards to speeding in the village I do use Hither Mead because taunton road horrible there is pot holes every where. I do keep to the speed limit of 30 mph. but a couple of years ago there was three people stood on the green bridge with a speed camera checking people’s speed which I did not have a problem with but haven’t they got better things to do. but the one that had camera in his hand I followed this person up the village and he was doing more then 30 mph so it kind of takes the mick a bit doesn’t it.

I used to live just off of Hither mead and the noise/speed of cars and mopeds alike was ridiculous. The children couldn't come out of the house without having to look down the PATH, yes path, incase a moped was driving up!!!!! Ridiculous!

Again though, not all and sadly a few that let the whole village down. There are always a small number that have no regard for others.

Not sure if spped bump are the answer but what is, in all honesty. You will never please everyone!

When ever they are speed checking I just wave them. haven’t they got better things to do with there time. we got police to short this problem out and as from the police community beat officers what waste of time they are. They wont to sort out the drinking and driving.
